Rosacea

Rosacea is an inflammatory disorder of the skin characterised by facial redness. Other features can include flushing, small visible blood vessels (telangiectasia), pimples, and skin thickening (phymatous change). Sometimes it can be associated with facial tenderness and burning/stinging discomfort. It is estimated to affect approximately 5% of adults worldwide, and it is more common in fairer skin types. Rosacea typically presents after the age of 30, and it is thought to be slightly more prevalent in women.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for rosacea. It is a chronic disease with symptoms that can be managed long-term with a variety of treatment options. These include general measures (identifying and avoiding triggers, appropriate skin cares), prescription topical or oral medications to reduce flushing or inflammation, and procedural interventions such as laser. Often a combination of these treatments will be needed to achieve and maintain results.

At Ascot Dermatology, our dermatologists and nurses use the Lutronic DermaV laser to treat the red blood vessel component of the rosacea. CO2 laser may be used to treat rhinophyma (skin thickening on the nose).
