Dermatitis/Eczema

Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a common skin disorder, which results in dry, itchy, red skin that may weep and become crusted. Eczema is estimated to affect one third of Australians at some point in their lives. It is most common in childhood, but can occur at any age. The disorder occurs due to an abnormally functioning immune system within the skin, which can be due to genetics, allergies, or specific environmental triggers.

Eczema can be managed by supporting the skin’s natural barrier function with regular application of bland hydrating moisturisers, and by avoiding things that irritate the skin (such as soaps).

Medical management consists of identifying and addressing potential triggers, prescription creams/ointments, phototherapy, oral medications, and injectable medications (dupilumab).
