Birthmarks

Any mark on the skin that is present at birth, or develops soon afterwards, is called a birthmark. Birthmarks are common, and there are many different types. In most cases, they occur completely by chance, but occasionally they may be inherited. Sometimes they may be a sign of an underlying disorder.

Red birthmarks are caused by an overgrowth of blood vessels. Brown, blue or black birthmarks are caused by pigment cells (melanocytes).

Most birthmarks are harmless. They tend to be permanent, although some types may fade with time.

Dermatologists may help in diagnosing the particular type of birthmark, diagnosing any underlying or associated conditions, determining if any treatment or monitoring is needed, and/or improving the cosmetic appearance of the birthmark.
