Hyperhidrosis Management

Hyperhidrosis refers to abnormal excessive sweating, and it can occur in up to 5% of the population. It may occur all over the body, or it may be localised to just one area (like the underarms, palms of the hands or soles of the feet). After medical causes of the excessive sweating have been excluded, there are many treatment options available for hyperhidrosis. These include topical and oral medications, inotophoresis, botulinum toxin injections or surgery.

This treatment can be used to temporarily block the release of acetylcholine, a chemical released by nerves that signal the glands in the skin to produce sweat. This treatment can be effective in blocking sweating for a number of months, and Medicare rebates are available for this procedure.

Inotophoresis is a procedure using a medical device in which an electric current is passed through skin soaked in water or topical anticholinergic medication. It can be particularly effective for treating excessive sweating of the palms and soles. Ascot Dermatology has iontophoresis machines available for patients to hire if they wish to trial this treatment option.
